New Government Web Site Helps People Avoid Moving Scams

WASHINGTON. D.C. - People hiring a mover this summer now have a new way to check online the background of the company they are paying to move their possessions.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) today announced its new web site, www.protectyourmove.gov , to help people avoid getting caught in a scam that could lead to their household goods being held hostage by a “rogue” mover. Rogue movers offer lowball estimates and then demand more money than originally agreed upon – in violation of Federal regulation.

“This site gives consumers the help they need to avoid scams before they get started,” said FMCSA Administrator Annette Sandberg.

The site provides a list of properly registered and insured movers, brokers and freight forwarders, details about regulations governing professional moving companies, information about how to file a complaint in the event of a problem and moving tips.

The site also will show visitors how to spot a rogue mover before trouble strikes, and offers links to local Better Business Bureaus, consumer protection agencies, state attorneys general and moving associations.

Each year, companies handle about 40 million household moves; and, while Sandberg said most are successful, she adds that federal, state and local agencies still get thousands of complaints about fraudulent movers. “If you don't do your homework, you could literally get left out in the cold,” Sandberg said.
